Strike Action-Thursday 16th March
Fri Mar 10 07:16amOur tamariki need a quality education. And we want to give that to them.
Unfortunately, the funding for our schools is not enough for us to give us the time we would like to support all our kids to thrive.
We need to attract and retain educators by ensuring that teaching is a valued and attractive profession.
Principals and teachers in primary and area schools have considered at length offers from the government to settle our respective collective agreements.
The offers did not meet our expectations, nor make sufficient steps towards the changes we need for our children to succeed.
You may have seen that we voted to take industrial action on 16 March.
It’s the last thing we wanted to do. And the decision was not taken lightly.
We felt that this was the only way the government would listen and recognise that when they support our children to learn and succeed, we are supporting whānau and communities to thrive.
We look forward to another great year in 2023 – and together with your support, building the case for better investment in our tamariki.

Well we survived yet another national state of emergency – the wind was as intense as the authorities had predicted. We hope everyone is safe, with family and with power.
We never close our school unless we feel that it is unsafe to operate – we certainly do not enjoy interrupting learning. Thanks for your support of this drastic measure that we had to undertake given the weather conditions and warnings we received.
With the forecast for tomorrow looking a lot calmer than today, and having done a school site visit and assessment, we feel that our school is safe to operate and as a result we will be open as normal for instruction tomorrow. The pool will remain closed for the rest of this week.
We will continue to monitor the weather and we will be in contact with you should anything change.
Thanks for support, for ‘hunkering’ down and being prepared.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Ngā mihi nui,
Natalie Looney
We hope you are all safe out there! I will be in touch later this afternoon with updates about school tomorrow. -Mrs Looney
Tue Feb 14 12:02pmNotice of closure – Cyclone Gabrielle. PLEASE READ
Mon Feb 13 02:32pmGood Afternoon Huirangi School Whanau,
Due to the anticipated weather event for Tuesday, we have decided to close the school for the day to ensure your child’s safety. Knowing that wind gusts may be between 100 and 140kmph is worrying to us. We are unsure whether we will have power and water, depending on how extreme the weather will become.
Whilst we know this is not ideal, the safety of our students, staff and community is priority.
Dependent on the forecast for Wednesday, we will make a decision at 2pm Tuesday as to whether we will be open on Wednesday or not.
Thank you for your understanding. We would rather be safe than sorry.
Ngā mihi,
Zara Ryan and Natalie Looney

Huirangi School-Application to Enrol 2023
Wed Feb 08 12:35pmEnrolment at Huirangi School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available at the school office or on our website. Students who live within our home zone have the right to enrol at any time.
Huirangi School Board of Trustees wishes to advise prospective parents and whānau that we are likely to have up to 8 out of zone places available. 5 spaces at New Entrant level beginning in Term 2, and 3 spaces in Year 2 to start during Term One 2023.
The exact number of out of zone places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone.
Applications are now being invited for those who will become, or are already, eligible for enrolment during this time. Application forms are available from our school office.
Applications for out of zone students must be received by the school before 1pm on Wednesday 15th February, 2023. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot is required, it will take place at 3pm on Friday 17th February 2023, and parents will be notified of the outcome that day.
